Over the past 30 years I have worked primarily in the nonprofit world to engage and support young people in their quest for lifelong learning and meaningful work. In that time, I have been inspired by brilliant women who demonstrated grit and determination on a daily basis. And my heart has held tight the hopes and dreams of women of all ages as they boldly followed their bliss.
Let’s face it, this past year has been a time for lots of reflection and introspection for most of us. We re-examined our priorities and in doing so perhaps learned more about what makes us truly joyful and fulfilled. Maybe we even allowed ourselves to ask that big question: What if...? For me the answer is taking my long-time obsession with interior design to the next level, starting my own company.
Coco Chanel once said, the most courageous act is to think for yourself. Aloud.
And so, here it goes. Today, I give voice to my absolute passion for sawdust and wet paint and power tools. With a hard swallow and knowing that women with far less privilege have taken much greater steps with fewer resources, please allow me to humbly introduce my new business Char and Batten.
In essence, a Char and Batten styled home reveals a story thoughtfully told. Gathering the unexpected, salvaged and repurposed, combined with textures and finishes that reflect an intentional life, a Char and Batten space celebrates grit and nurtures the soul.
When urban industrial meets modern farmhouse for strong black coffee in a mid-century modern loft, conversation turns to what matters. And those are the conversations I want to create space for.
Every woman's success should be an inspiration to another, according to Serena Williams. We're strongest when we cheer each other on. Is there anyone else ready to launch a new business or plan? On this International Women’s Day, I am jumping in with both feet and hoping my courage will embolden you, too.
